Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse (AD 618 - 906)

This very attractive pottery model of a horse was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in a reddish-brown pigment with black and white pigments to highlight the head, mane and tail. This horse is well-modelled and stands straight, alert, looking ahead.

A set of plain candle sticks, called shokudai, used for hanging on a wall (like sconces). Each stick is made of bamboo. This is a japanese antique Edo period (1800-1867)hemp Buddhist Shugensha hanten coat worn by Shugen practitioners and Yamabushi who practiced Shugendo. Shugendo is a unique Japanese religion that combines Buddhism, Shinto and the worship of nature (mountains). It has some light stains and one very small hole, but is in very good condition. A black pottery inks-tone was a rare survivor of scholar items from ancient time.
With characteristic image of a toad, the ink-stone was assembled by a cover and a basin.
Vividly it was depicted on the surface with toad's skin when old adhesives were preserved within the pleats.
One old chip was found on the side of the cover.

A very fine twig basket, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. It was found in Pennsylvania, and is painted black, with the border and edge decoration painted in green, yellow, and orange over the black. The interior central portion of the basket is painted in green.

Fine quality Japanese Meiji silver incense burner, ca 1890. Barrel-form with solid top and bottom and open sides; applied chrysanthemums heightened with gold and silver. This tubular shaped holder is partially hollowed on one end in order to receive a peacock feather decoration. The jade is a white tone with white mottling and a very slight hint of green when held to the light. It has a soft polish and even wear from use. Good condition.
