This is a rare well modeled and detailed 19th century porcelain elephant by Samson. It is based upon an outstanding 1680 Japanese Kakiemon model, which, in turn, was derived from Chinese prototypes. The piece is eleven inches in height and is enameled in red and cobalt.

Antique Tibetan hand-carved wooden deity mask of Mahakala, a guardian diety, the fierce and powerful being and counterpart to Kali / Mahakali. His name means "Greater than Time" as he upholds ultimate rule and power over all forces, including time and death. Nice 6” plate in the “Horse Chestnut” pattern by Dedham Pottery. The crackling is very even and the blue is strong. The back has both the ink stamp and the incised rabbit mark.

Cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine unrefined Mino clay. Style (trimmed mouth, very controlled glaze) make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls. The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical white, feldspatic Shino glaze which has been poured and under which a decoration of brush strokes has been applied in iron oxide (oni ita) representing grass and fences.

Chinese silver mug, ca 1865. Straight and upward tapering sides with dense low-relief frieze: Spearmen and swordsmen on foot and horse thrust and lunge and, in some cases, fall in battle. Applied armorial shield with engraved presentation dated “May 4th 1865”. S-scroll handle in form of scaly dragon with horned head peering over rim. Marked. Very good condition with deep patina.

An antique Japanese Kotansu for traveling administrators made of Sugi (Cryptomeria) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Hirute style handles. Unusual dual opening drawer allowed two administrators on each side of the tansu to access the same drawers and supplies. Family crest on the door.

Elegant pair of Chinese export porcelain soup plates decorated with a floral scene in the famille rose palette. Pheasants, beetles and butterflies are scattered among the pink peonies, orange pomegranates and blue-green bamboo stalks. The rim is decorated with a striking band of blue and gold strapwork in the Persian taste. The contrast of the restrained formal border pattern against the exuberant naturalistic design of the bowl is striking.

Oval silver box and lid of tea caddy shape, the knop of the lid a natural oval stone, probably veined gneiss. Engraved Georgian style borders and crest, the crest with a dedication, “From Steanis”, a gift in Georgian style and probably made around 1900. The box is unmarked and has been tested as sterling silver. Its weight is 798 grams. Length "7 ¼ / 18.5 cm, height including the knob "4 ¾ / 12cm. Decorated under the glaze with stylized patterns and concentric circles in iron oxide. Skillfully wheel-thrown and rests on a slightly flaring foot. Well-formed lid is surmounted by a circular knop with a yellowish-brown iron glaze. The interior and foot are unglazed. There are minor areas of glaze degradation on the top of the lid from burial. Some minor wear, small old chips to the interior lip of the bowl. Some evidence of burial earth remaining.

The lacquered case opens to reveal a molded earthenware figure of Fudo Myoo, one of the 'five great kings of ligh.” The ceramic figure has an old, restuck break horizontally across the top of the base, otherwise it is in very good condition. The figure sits neatly into a carved recessed part of the interior base of the case. The case is lacquered a brownish black and is in good condition. Acquired in Kyoto in the early 1970s.

Pretty Edwardian sterling silver basket with roses. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York. Circular well with flared sides and wide mouth. Sides have alternating solid and pierced trellis. 18th century Indian bronze votive sculpture of standing Bhairava accompanied by a small figure of a saddled horse. Govinda Bhairava is a syncretic form of Vishnu and Shiva. The upper hands are holding Vishnu’s attributes (Chakra and Shankha) and the lower hands are holding Shiva’s attributes (staff and begging bowl). Rare icon,. wonderful casting, beautiful devotional wear, excellent patina, traces of red sandalwood paste used during worship. Height 2 3/8 inches.

A sublime Korean celadon bowl with a flower and scrolling vine motif imprinted on the inside of the bowl bordered with an incised line below the rim. The grey green glaze displays a dense web or craze of lines. Korean celadon wares have been favored by the Korean court and by the Japanese, who call it Korai Seiji. The pieces were used in chanoyu as tea bowls and as bowls for sweets. Age: Goreyo Dynasty. Size: Height: 3" Diameter: 7.5"

A powder flask of a natural painted turtle and fitted boxwood nozzle and stopper cover. The skeletal shell of the turtle is smooth with a warm tone patina.
