This small hand carved wooden container would have been used to store smoking tobacco, and would have been worn hanging from a belt the same as a Japanese inro. Although similar types of containers would have used by both traditional Han Chinese and ethnic minority Chinese, this particular container is definately traditional Han Chinese. This early 20th century Chinese carved wood statue is 5" tall, 6 1/8" wide and 3 1/4" in depth. The statue presents the legendary Chinese character Liu Hai. This character is an eternally young boy who is always accompanied by a three legged toad. The statue presents a smiling Liu Hai seated comfortably on a rock with a whisk and straw hat on his back and the three legged toad resting on his right foot. Aside from a minor repair on his left toe, it is in great condition.

It is beautifully potted in an ovid melon form with in a transparent icy green glaze, with the rounded side tapering to a short foot. The qingpai glazing which is uneven, fall short of the short foot-rim with a recessed base.

There are no repairs or restorations. There is some minor firing fault, degradation, glaze crazing and minor losses as shown in all the photograps. Minor scattered oxidise spot as shown in all the photographs...

A very rare Qingbai melon shaped water dropper from the Hutian kilns. Date: Song Dynasty (960-1279) Height: ca. 4,5 cm Condition:a large (5 mm) chip under the spout.

Description: An ivory brushrest was in a fine look.
Depicting the mountain view and a monk-like figure which were in characteristic simple form of early Qing periods, the ivory piece was well rendered by affluent carving skills.
The enduring old and warm patina was preserved on the surface when darken adhesives were kept in the crevices due to age.
It was kept in a perfect condition and was fitted with a later made wood stand.
